5 Reasons to Add Curtains as Window Treatments

In my experience as an interior decorator, I believe most windows need some type of window treatment. Blinds are an extremely popular and functional choice for most rooms and are sufficient on their own. However, curtains as window treatments add something special to the design and are worth the investment.

Velvet Damask was the Inspiration for these curtains as window treatments.

Why You Should Add Curtains as Window Treatments

  1. Fabric draperies help absorb sound and provide options for changing the room’s light level.
  2. Well-chosen curtains help to pull the room’s design elements (wallpaper, paint, furniture) together.
  3. A fabulous fabric in any room – especially on the windows (often a focal point) – adds a pizzazz you may be missing in your space.
  4. Curtains chosen with care and coordinated with throw pillows and other accessories help your space feel “finished.”
  5. Custom draperies made with quality fabrics elevate any space to a higher level of design.

How to Shop for Drapery Fabric

If you visit a fabric store, you will know that the choices seem endless. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on your level of expertise in choosing the right fabric. Before visiting the store, you should have some ideas about what you want. For example, you can search online for inspirational pictures. Pinterest is a fabulous source of ideas.

When shopping, you will also need tremendous patience, as there are hundreds of fabric books available. Consequently, you need to look at a lot of them to find the right fabric. If you visit a custom drapery shop, the staff can help you narrow down which fabric books you should look at. Of course, as your interior decorator, I can definitely help you choose an ideal fabric.

Create A Design Plan

Please, I implore you – do not choose a paint colour before you choose curtains for window treatments. Fabric choices are not endless, but you can create any paint colour you want. Also, if you are purchasing new furniture, creating a design plan for all the elements is essential before you finalize and purchase anything. In fact, you should take all the fabric samples and paint colours home because sometimes, they appear completely different under the lighting at home than they do at the store.

Consider Hiring an Interior Decorator

If you are overwhelmed, hire an interior decorator to assist you. Their expertise is invaluable. They can advise you on curtains as window treatments, as well as paint, furniture, lighting, flooring, accessories and more. Additionally, they can assure you that you will make good choices and be completely happy with your space once it’s complete.

  1. I always marvel at decor that mixes fabrics with colour, pattern & texture and would not know where to begin. Thanks Jane for the great article. A designer is definately the way to go!

  2. I love you and your show. I can’t get enough of it. I just wish your were in Toronto or offered online and virtual sessions.

And I love drapes / curtains also. But I like to change them out in winter and summer for the heat and cold.
