In nearly every client’s home, we find cherished family photos and beautiful artwork tucked away in closets or hidden behind furniture instead of being enjoyed. It always makes me a little sad. That’s why I make it a point to hang pictures so they can truly shine. If you’d like to take on this project yourself, here are five essential tools for successful picture hanging.
Time
Hanging pictures might seem simple, but putting together a thoughtful display usually takes more time than expected. For example, we recently finished hanging and arranging artwork in a client’s home. It took two of us more than six hours to get everything done. We broke the job into two shorter sessions since it can be tiring, both physically and mentally. First, we worked with the client to choose where each piece should go, and then we determined how best to group them. After that, we hung the artwork on the walls.
Hang & Level
The Hang & Level is a magical tool for successful picture hanging. I got mine over 20 years ago at a conference for professional organizers. I have used this item more than any other tool in my toolkit ever since. In fact, I’ve replaced this trusty device several times because eventually the little pins that mark the location of the nails wear out or the plastic breaks. However, it is still worth owning one of these tools. You likely won’t use it as much as I do, so it should last a long time.
Sturdy Step Ladder
Please do not stand on a chair or a stool to hang pictures! Be safe and purchase a good-quality ladder. I recommend a folding 3-step ladder with a built-in shelf near the top to hold your tools. Because it folds almost flat (less than 10cm), it fits easily in closets or that narrow space between the fridge and the wall. We use ours regularly for a bevy of household tasks.
If you need a taller ladder or a folding one that works in stairwells, consider borrowing one from a friend or family member or renting one from a hardware store. Then you’re not paying for something that you only use once and which could end up cluttering your home.
Picture Hanging Hardware
If you visit a hardware store, you’ll see dozens and dozens of specialty products for hanging artwork and decorative items. It’s crucial to plan your project and buy the appropriate hardware before you start. There is nothing more frustrating than allotting time to tackle a home décor or organizing project, only to make one (or more) trips to the hardware store to get what you need. Trust me, you won’t finish what you started!
These are my favourite pieces of hardware for successful picture hanging:
- Command Medium Adhesive Picture Hanging Strips: These are great for light-weight frames. Because they don’t leave holes in walls, they are useful for students and renters.
- Hillman/OOK Picture Hangers: These museum-quality hangers come with easy-to-remove blue steel nails. They come in a variety of sizes for different frame weights. Some are specifically for drywall or plaster walls.
- Hillman Brass Nails: Use these nails to hang lightweight frames on wood, such as shiplap or framing
Get Help
Please do not try to tackle a large artwork-hanging project by yourself. You will need an extra set of eyes to help you place the items in visually pleasing groupings and at the right spot on the wall. Additionally, you will want that extra set of hands to help you measure long walls, hold the frames steady, and put them up. If you have a very heavy item or want to hang it in a stairwell or another awkward location, consider hiring a handyman to install it properly. The last thing you want is for a much-loved portrait to come crashing down when you least expect it.
I’ve learned that successful picture hanging comes down to thoughtful planning and the right approach. It takes more time and effort than you might expect, but with the proper tools and adequate preparation, the process becomes much more manageable. Equally important is having a second set of hands and eyes to ensure your pieces are placed in a way that feels balanced and visually appealing. With these essentials in place, you can confidently display your artwork and décor, transforming your home into a space that feels both organized and beautifully curated.
