This quote says it all: “Don’t let the past steal your present.“ As a professional organizer and interior decorator, I often see homes stuck in the past, rather than becoming beautiful, welcoming spaces that reflect and support homeowners’ present lives.

What Are You Holding Onto?
A lot of us hold onto items from the past. Sometimes it reflects a life well-lived. However, if you keep boxes of children’s artwork long after they’ve grown, store furniture that no longer fits your style because it belonged to someone you loved, or hang onto décor you don’t like because letting it go feels like erasing a memory, it becomes harder to make room for what’s important to you right now. In fact, memories live in us, not in the things we own.
When we cling tightly to belongings from the past, they can slowly become a burden. Our closets become crowded, basements overflow, and spare rooms turn into storage units rather than functional spaces. Instead of feeling peaceful and inspired, our homes are weighed down by indecision and clutter.
This clutter isn’t just physical. It can also drain your energy and affect your well-being.
If every surface is covered with belongings, you might feel guilty about letting go so you can redecorate, or worry about getting rid of things that are still in good condition. Organizing can mean dealing with items that bring up strong feelings. But putting off these changes keeps you stuck in the past and prevents your home from reflecting who you are today.
If this feels familiar, the past might be holding you back from enjoying the present.
Don’t Wait: Make a Change
When I help clients get ready to sell their homes, we usually want to declutter first, and then they can repaint, update light fixtures, and make the rooms look great for photos. Almost every time, they tell me, “I wish I had done this years ago.”
They realize they spent years with out-of-date paint colours, cluttered rooms, furniture they didn’t like, and overflowing storage spaces. In the end, they create a fresh, welcoming home, but it’s for someone else. It makes more sense to declutter and redecorate for yourself, not just for the next owner.
Why Are You Putting Off Decluttering and Redecorating?
There are lots of reasons people put off decluttering and redecorating. Some of the most common are:
- Inertia: Not knowing how or where to start.
- Guilt: Too many emotions tied to the past.
- No major events: The belief that change is only justified if there is a major life event.
Getting started can be challenging, but change doesn’t require a major life event. Refreshing your home is not about erasing your past; it’s about choosing what still supports you and letting go of what doesn’t. Keep the meaningful pieces and design spaces that reflect your current needs, tastes, and home vision.
When you clear out what no longer fits, you create room, physically and emotionally, for new possibilities. Then your home can support the life you live today, rather than act as a museum of yesterday.
You Deserve to Live in the Present
Your life is happening in the present moment. Don’t postpone it; give it your full attention now. The only real regret isn’t letting go, but wishing you’d let go sooner. If you’ve been thinking about decluttering or refreshing your space, I’d be glad to help you take the first step. Reach out, and we can create a home that reflects the life you’re living now.
I first heard this quote from Eckhart Tolle. However, after some research, I found that it has also been attributed to American author Cherríe L. Moraga, British-American novelist Taylor Caldwell, and may originally be a derivation of the Bible verse from Philippians 3:13. Regardless of where it originated, I hope it inspires you to honour your past but live fully in the present.
