5 Factors for a Fabulous Powder Room Renovation

I do so enjoy a powder room makeover. It’s an exciting project, but planning carefully is essential to ensure the process goes smoothly and the results meet your expectations. A typical powder room renovation project is quick and easy. Having said that, you will likely require a handyperson, plumber, and electrician in addition to an interior decorator. Here are five key factors to remember before starting your powder room renovation.

Before starting any renovation project, establish a realistic budget. Factor in any “you might as well” upgrades, such as heated floors (always a good choice if you decide to change the flooring). Be sure to leave some wiggle room in your budget for unforeseen circumstances that may arise during the renovation process.

Layout and Design

Think carefully about the layout and design of your new powder room. Consider how you currently use the space and any changes you would like to make to improve functionality and aesthetics, such as storage space, lighting, and ventilation. Work with your interior decorator to capture your design style. Even though powder rooms are small, you can still have a lot of fun with bold choices in materials, wallpaper, and paint colour.

Plumbing and Electrical

A powder room renovation involves working with existing plumbing and electrical systems. Plumbing upgrades should be straightforward if you keep the sink and toilet in the same location. On the electrical side, if you want in-floor heating, your electrician must examine your electrical panel to account for the extra power draw. Hiring qualified professionals for any plumbing or electrical work is essential to ensure it’s done safely and meets building code standards.

Materials and Fixtures

Selecting suitable yet stylish materials and fixtures is the fun part of a powder room renovation. When choosing flooring, wall covering, etc., remember that you are in a space where water can splash onto walls and floors. Naturally, you’ll want to consider factors like durability and maintenance, as well as aesthetics. For example, my most recent powder room project had MDF (medium-density fibreboard) baseboards that deteriorated due to water damage. In a damp space, it’s worth spending extra money on genuine wood trim, which dries quickly if it gets wet.

When planning your powder room (or any room for that matter) makeover, I suggest you start by maximizing storage options. For example, add a mirrored medicine cabinet instead of a plain mirror, replace a pedestal sink with a vanity cabinet, and perhaps add shelving or cupboards over the toilet.

Consider choosing some funky flooring or gorgeous wallpaper and then build your design plan from there to coordinate with that one “wow” element. Take the time to research and select high-quality materials and fixtures that will stand the test of time. Or, better yet, hire someone to help you get it just right.

Finally, be realistic about the timeline for your bathroom renovation and plan accordingly. Consider factors like how far in advance you need to order materials, the contractors’ availability, and any potential delays that may occur along the way. Communicate clearly with the tradespeople and establish a timeline that works for everyone involved. When I manage a renovation, I have all the fixtures and materials on site before the demolition phase of the project. It minimizes delays because the tradespeople can start once the demolition is complete. Even though you must find a temporary storage area for these items, it’s worth reorganizing your home to accommodate them, trust me!

A powder room renovation can be very rewarding, but, like any renovation project, it requires careful planning and attention to detail. Considering these five critical factors before starting your project will ensure you are pleased with your new space once it’s complete. If you’re considering a renovation, contact me today.
