Don’t Be Afraid to Embrace Minimalism

Minimalism sometimes gets a bad reputation. Perhaps it’s because minimalist décor is now considered “out,” and being out of style isn’t something most of us want. Many people also worry that choosing minimalism means giving up everything and living in a stark and uninviting home. Fortunately, that is not true. Here are a few easy steps you can take to embrace minimalism, own less and enjoy life more.

Stop Following Trends

In my experience, trying to keep up with the latest trends usually isn’t worth it. It leads to second-guessing your choices, from organizing products to furniture to paint colours. Therefore, my first piece of advice is to let that go.

Trends encourage constant replacement, leading to extra spending and waste. If you base your decisions on the latest trends, it’s too easy to fall into the “never enough” mindset. In fact, you will buy things you don’t really like to make your home look like a magazine photo, instead of choosing what actually fits your lifestyle and your personal style.

Live With Intention

The living-with-less mindset is about living intentionally. Ideally, keep things that align with the goals for your life and home. Holding onto everything is likely not serving you.

Once you let go of things you don’t use or enjoy, you will create space for what truly matters. If you need to buy something new, do so with intention and purpose, and only when you need it.

Remember, you are not missing out; you’re valuing everything that enters your home. For example, before buying something you don’t really need, ask yourself if you would feel deprived by leaving the item at the store. The next day, you likely won’t even remember what you thought you needed.

Let Go and Find Freedom

Learning to let go takes time. A powerful question to ask yourself is, “What would my life be like if I no longer owned this?” If you would feel a little lighter and enjoy a little more space in your home, then let it go. Also, think about whether your space supports the way you want to live. If it doesn’t, maybe it’s time for a change.
