The Philosophy of Having Enough

On Cyber Monday, my email inbox overflowed with deals, such as “50% OFF” and “BUY NOW!” “LAST CHANCE!” and so on and so on. Suddenly, it was just too much. I unsubscribed from as many email lists as possible in the time I had available. Even though I choose to live a more minimalist lifestyle, I am not immune to the ease of online shopping and the temptation that it provides. However, the universe sent me a very clear message that morning at just the right moment – the message of “having enough.”

I love listening to podcasts. I discovered that one of my favourite authors and speakers, Dr. Wayne Dyer, has a whole collection of audio recordings. The episode I listened to on Cyber Monday included Dr. Dyer’s philosophy on “having enough.” Of all days for me to find this inspirational message – I felt I had to share this perfect coincidence with you. In fact, that morning, I clicked on one of those Cyber Monday “SAVE NOW” promotions and started down the rabbit hole of shopping. But thankfully, I pulled myself out and moved on with my day. I honestly didn’t want or need to buy more “stuff.”

The “Never Having Enough” Trap

Dr. Dyer frequently discussed the “Never Having Enough” theme in his work. He emphasized the mental and emotional patterns that contribute to feelings of scarcity and lack. He believed the concept of “never having enough” was an illusion created by the mind. Additionally, he argued that societal norms, family upbringing, and the media condition us to focus on acquiring more possessions to feel fulfilled. The constant striving for more is a trap (often called the hedonic treadmill). When stuck in this trap, people don’t experience true abundance, which he defines as a state of alignment with our higher selves and the universe.

According to Dr. Dyer, these “never enough” feelings stem from a mindset rooted in materialism and fear. It can lead us to believe they will never have enough of what we desire, whether it be wealth, love, success, or happiness. He emphasizes the importance of shifting from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance. His teachings examine the idea that scarcity is a belief, and we can adjust our thoughts and, thereby, our beliefs.

Cultivating an Abundance Mindset

Abundance is not solely about material wealth but about the richness of life itself. We can truly change our lives if we can be present, grateful, and open to the flow of energy and opportunities. Dr. Dyer advocated for an approach to wealth and success where we trust that the universe will provide what we need when we need it – often in unexpected ways. (Was it really a coincidence I heard this particular message on Cyber Monday, or was it the universe giving me what I needed?)

Dr. Dyer also discussed the impact of negative thoughts and emotions creating a sense of lacking or longing. I think that when we believe we lack something in our lives, we try to fill that void with more stuff. It is so easy to buy things with the hope that they will help us feel happier and more successful. Interestingly, many of my clients even attach the word “love” to their possessions. I often remind them that “stuff” cannot love them back.

Please take some time to explore Dr. Dyer’s philosophies. Perhaps you will choose to adopt those that help you let go of the desire to fill your life with more possessions. I think, deep down, we know that owning more will not bring us happiness.

You can never get enough of what you don't really need. Quote by Eric Hoffer.

After working in the professional organizing industry for decades, I frequently find that when clients let go of the constant desire for more, it can be life-changing. When you embrace an abundance mindset, you create space (physically and mentally) for what is truly important. If you’re ready to declutter your home and experience the freedom of “having enough,” contact me today. Together, we can make room for the joy and richness you deserve.
