The Benefits of Making Lists for the Holiday Season – and Beyond

Making lists is incredibly beneficial, especially during busy times like the holiday season. Here’s why lists are an essential organizing tool.

an example of making lists: a holiday to-do list

Making Lists Provide Clarity and Focus

Writing down tasks clears your mind and reduces the chance of missing important details. It also allows you to focus on one task at a time, so you don’t feel overwhelmed.

As we prepare for the holiday season, creating a shopping list for gifts is a good idea because it ensures you don’t forget anyone and helps you stay within your budget. A grocery list is something I recommend as a valuable tool every week. I use an app called Out of Milk, but there are many others. In the app, you can categorize your lists to improve organization and efficiency. Common categories include groceries, meal ideas, pharmacy items, future purchases (i.e. wish lists), etc.

They Aid in Prioritization

Lists allow you to rank tasks by importance or urgency. Then, you can tackle the most critical items first. Making lists helps you keep track of what you need to do and enables you to eliminate some tasks altogether. Take a good look at what’s truly important and how much time you realistically have available, and then edit that list! It’s a sure-fire way to prevent a complicated and overscheduled life.

As we launch into the holiday season, you can prioritize planning meals and decorating over less urgent tasks, like organizing your closets. However, I suggest you add the closet organizing project to your list for January.

Making Lists Save Time

Lists provide a roadmap, saving time and energy. For example, you save time because you don’t need to remember everything; it’s right there in front of you. As soon as you think of something you must do, add it to your list immediately. Then, you won’t forget it. Or worse, remember when it’s too late or in the middle of the night.

A list of chores can be helpful at this time of year. It will ensure you complete all the steps when cleaning or preparing your home for guests. A list allows you to easily delegate some chores to others. Please keep in mind you don’t have to do it all yourself.

You Can Reduce Stress

Lists are simple yet powerful tools to help you manage your responsibilities. When you write down your tasks in a list, it frees up mental space. Instead of worrying about forgetting something, you can focus clearly on the task at hand. Plus, crossing items off your list provides a sense of accomplishment and peace of mind.

A list turns an overwhelming number of tasks into a manageable plan. When you see your responsibilities laid out, it will give you a sense of structure and control. As a result, the workload will feel more achievable. You will also realize when you are taking on too much and identify which tasks to delegate or eliminate.

For example, a party planning to-do list reduces last-minute panic as we approach the holiday season. For extra efficiency, keep the list so you don’t have to recreate it again next year.

Lists Provide Accountability

A physical or digital list serves as a reminder. However, it can also be a great motivator to help you and others stay on track. For example, assigning chores to family members using a list ensures everyone knows their responsibilities. While paper lists might work well for younger children, a digital list-making app is excellent for teens. As they accomplish their chores, they check them off their list. With shared lists, you can see what they accomplish and when and can provide positive reinforcement.

Whether preparing for the holiday season or managing daily life, lists are powerful tools to keep you organized, reduce stress, and ensure you complete your tasks on time. However, if you find the amount of work overwhelming, asking for help is the best place to start. I can help you streamline your lists, prioritize tasks, and set up systems tailored to your needs.
